Burning Caripero

By Kan Hayami

Burning Caripero is an unconventional, technology-driven work of fiction that blends personal conflict, dark humor, artificial intelligence, and social criticism. Inspired by an actual dispute, the book explores what happens when a person's determination to defend his principles collides with an impersonal digital marketplace—and when the AI systems he relies on become part of the problem.

Review

In Burning Caripero, Kan Hayami transforms an apparently ordinary online marketplace dispute into an unexpectedly ambitious exploration of technology, human dignity, artificial intelligence, and the dangers of allowing frustration to consume one's life.

At the center of the story is Hayami Kan, a retired Tokyo firefighter who is trying to establish a new life through literary translation and small online sales. A dispute over a used computer motherboard, sold through the fictional marketplace Caripero, draws him into a prolonged confrontation with a buyer he believes is acting dishonestly. What begins as a relatively minor transaction gradually becomes an all-consuming battle involving customer service, corporate accountability, technical arguments, and the limitations of artificial intelligence.

One of the book's most distinctive features is its presentation. Rather than following a conventional narrative structure, much of the story unfolds through exchanges between Hayami and various AI assistants. Screenshots, reconstructed conversations, technical explanations, and the protagonist's increasingly elaborate responses create the impression of watching an unfolding digital investigation. The result is an unusual blend of fiction, documentary-style storytelling, and technological satire.

The AI conversations are particularly effective in revealing the book's central irony. Hayami turns to artificial intelligence for advice, reassurance, and practical assistance, yet the assistants sometimes reinforce his suspicions rather than challenge them. They confidently speculate about the buyer's motives, repeatedly portray him as dishonest, and occasionally make assertions that are not supported by the available evidence. The author's explanatory notes explicitly acknowledge instances of AI hallucination, including a fabricated detail about the buyer's profile.

These episodes give the novel a sharper purpose than a simple account of an unpleasant online transaction. Hayami's experience illustrates how an AI assistant can become an echo chamber, amplifying a user's anger and transforming uncertainty into apparent certainty. The book's treatment of this issue is both timely and thought-provoking, particularly as AI becomes increasingly integrated into everyday decision-making.

Hayami himself is an engaging, if occasionally exasperating, protagonist. His technical interests, stubborn independence, and fierce attachment to his principles make him memorable. His dispute with Caripero is about more than money: it becomes a struggle over honesty, competence, fairness, and the treatment of ordinary people by powerful institutions. His determination is admirable, although his inability to disengage from the conflict also demonstrates how the pursuit of justice can become a trap of its own.

The novel's supporting details help give this struggle a personal dimension. Hayami's retirement, his efforts to make a living through translation, his affection for his cat, and his interest in older computer hardware reveal a man whose identity is bound up with the things he values. The computer components are not merely commodities to him; they represent technical curiosity, personal attachment, and a belief in doing things properly. These quieter elements provide welcome contrast to the escalating online confrontation.

The book's later sections broaden its ambitions beyond the original marketplace dispute, exploring the relationship between human beings and increasingly sophisticated AI systems. The discussion of human ingenuity, the use of tools, and the danger of machines treating people as instruments introduces a philosophical dimension that helps explain the title's broader significance. The conclusion also returns to the natural world, offering a quieter, more contemplative counterpoint to the preceding conflict.

The book's unconventional structure is both its greatest strength and its principal weakness. Readers interested in AI, computing, online marketplaces, and the psychology of digital disputes will likely appreciate its unusual approach. However, the extended dialogue exchanges, repeated arguments, technical digressions, and recurring accusations can make the narrative feel circular. At times, the AI assistants' lengthy responses repeat Hayami's own assumptions instead of moving the story forward. Readers expecting a fast-paced conventional novel may find the experience demanding.

Nevertheless, Burning Caripero has a distinctive voice and a clear intellectual purpose. It is a work about technology, but also about the very human need to be heard, to be treated fairly, and to retain some measure of control in an increasingly automated world.

Kan Hayami has written an unusual and frequently provocative book that challenges readers to consider not only what artificial intelligence can do, but also what can go wrong when we trust it too readily. Beneath the technical details and dark humor lies a recognizable human struggle: the difficulty of knowing when to stand one's ground and when to reclaim one's life by walking away.

Recommended for readers interested in artificial intelligence, technology, digital culture, and unconventional literary fiction that raises questions about the relationship between people and the systems they create.
