Review of LOOPED: A Time-Bending Odyssey
by Sathyaraj Natarajan
A secret experiment meant to create a tiny time loop goes badly wrong, leaving scientist Aarav Menon and his team facing an alien visitor named Zaaren. As time begins to fracture around them, the scientists must decide whether they can trust him—and whether helping him return home could put Earth in danger.
LOOPED moves quickly and has an appealing central idea. I especially liked the shift from treating Zaaren as a possible threat to recognizing that he, too, is caught in a crisis. His descriptions of Veloria, with its floating cities and glowing forests, give the story a sense of wonder. The choice between studying his technology and protecting both worlds also raises a worthwhile question about what scientists owe to those affected by their discoveries.
The book would benefit from a tighter edit. Several chapters repeat the team’s fears and the urgency of their work, while Zaaren’s departure appears to happen more than once across the final chapters. Those repetitions weaken the suspense just when the story should be building toward its conclusion. I also wanted more time with the individual scientists, whose reactions often serve the plot more than reveal distinct personalities.
Still, this is an imaginative, accessible start to a larger science fiction story. Readers who enjoy first contact, time anomalies, and the promise of an expansive alien world may find plenty here to draw them into the next book.
