Ross Austin takes some of the biggest and most fascinating questions imaginable—about planets, stars, black holes, astronauts, rockets, alien life, and the universe itself—and answers them in language that young readers can understand without making the science feel simplistic.
The book is organized around 84 “why” and “how” questions, allowing children to read it from beginning to end or jump directly to whichever subject captures their attention. The range of questions is impressive. Some address basic concepts, such as why Mars is red, why the Moon shines, and why planets orbit the Sun. Others venture into more challenging territory: What would happen near a black hole? Can telescopes see back in time? Does time move differently in space? Could another universe exist alongside our own? The result is a book broad enough to serve as a child’s general introduction to space while still containing plenty of material to surprise readers who already know many of the standard facts.
One of the book’s best features is its recurring “Guess First” section. Before revealing an answer, Austin asks readers to choose from three possibilities. This turns passive reading into an interactive experience. Children must think about what they already know, test their assumptions, and then discover whether their reasoning was correct. The incorrect choices are often based on understandable misconceptions, making the quizzes especially useful teaching tools.
Each topic then provides a “Quick Answer” followed by “The Amazing Answer,” which explains the science in greater depth. This layered presentation is extremely effective. A younger child can learn the essential point from the short answer, while an older or especially curious reader can continue into the fuller explanation. Additional features—including “New Word,” “Amazing Fact,” “Did You Know?” and “The Big Idea”—reinforce important concepts without making the pages feel like school assignments.
Austin is particularly good at correcting common misunderstandings. Astronauts do not float because gravity disappears; they float because they and their spacecraft are falling around Earth together. A rocket does not need air to push against because it is propelled by its own exhaust. The Sun is not burning like an ordinary fire; nuclear fusion produces its energy. Space is not simply one uniformly frozen environment, and someone exposed to its vacuum would not instantly become a block of ice. These explanations are clear, memorable, and likely to replace misleading images children may have absorbed from movies and television.
The author also handles uncertainty responsibly. When discussing whether aliens exist, what might be found beneath Europa’s ice, why Saturn has rings, or whether other universes could exist, he carefully distinguishes established knowledge from scientific hypotheses. Children are told when evidence is strong, when an idea comes from models or experiments, and when scientists simply do not yet know the answer. That honesty is one of the book’s greatest strengths. It teaches readers that science is not merely a collection of settled facts; it is also a continuing process of observation, questioning, testing, and discovery.
The visual design is excellent. Photographs, illustrations, comparison diagrams, timelines, and clearly labeled sections make complicated ideas much easier to grasp. The uncluttered layouts, limited color palette, large headings, and generous use of space give every topic an inviting appearance. Particularly successful visuals explain orbital motion, the enormous scale of the observable universe, how telescopes detect unseen planets, and the different ways speed and gravity affect clocks. The images are not merely decorative—they actively support the explanations.
Some of the later subjects, particularly relativity, cosmology, and the multiverse, may require a little assistance for readers at the youngest end of the suggested age range. That is not really a weakness, however. The book is designed to grow with a child, and its layered format allows younger readers to enjoy the main ideas while leaving more complicated details for later exploration.
The closing chapter, “What Will You Discover?” provides a fitting conclusion. Rather than presenting space science as something conducted only by famous astronauts and distant experts, it encourages children to observe, build, study, write code, ask questions, and imagine themselves participating in future discoveries. A useful glossary and list of trusted resources from organizations such as NASA, the European Space Agency, and the SETI Institute extend the learning beyond the book.
Amazing Answers for Curious Kids: Space Edition is accurate, visually appealing, thoughtfully organized, and genuinely exciting.
