A Remarkable, Integrated View of the Nineteenth Century Timeline 1800–1899 by Dianne L. Durante is an ambitious and exceptionally well-organized reference work that brings the nineteenth century to life. Rather than treating history as a succession of wars, rulers, and political events, Durante shows how developments in politics, economics, science, technology, philosophy, religion, literature, architecture, painting, sculpture, and music influenced one another. In this respect, the book reminds me of Will and Ariel Durant’s monumental The Story of Civilization . The most important similarity is their integrated view of history. Both reject the idea that history consists merely of political milestones. A scientific discovery, philosophical argument, novel, economic theory, painting, or musical composition can be as historically revealing as a battle or an election. Review of Beautiful Catastrophes: Fragments of the Fallen by Chase Walker

Beautiful Catastrophes is a difficult, deeply personal collection of poetry and creative nonfiction about trauma, destructive behavior, and the work of changing. Walker does not ask readers to overlook the harm he caused because he suffered as a child. The collection’s most compelling idea is that understanding where a pattern began does not remove the responsibility to break it. The poems give shape to isolation, shame, and the feeling of being trapped inside one’s own mind. “The Realization of Self” is especially effective: the speaker crosses state lines looking for escape, only to recognize that he has brought himself along. “The Space Between” finds a quieter register. Its speaker is neither triumphant nor fully healed, but still present and still writing toward a different life. The prose in Part II makes the collection more than a record of pain.
