Book Review: Angel Dawn: A Don Clayton Adventure — Part One by Max Feldman

A rain-soaked New York street, a mysterious black sedan, and an uneasy NYPD officer provide an atmospheric opening to Angel Dawn. Don Clayton soon finds himself drawn into a secret operation whose roots reach back to the Philadelphia Experiment. What begins as an investigation expands into a fight involving Cold War secrets, an extraordinary enemy, and powers Don is only beginning to understand.

Feldman writes action on a large scale. Surveillance missions turn into violent confrontations, and a later operation at a nuclear facility raises the stakes considerably. The scenes are easy to picture: storm clouds, dark corridors, flashing emergency lights, and the constant threat of an attack give the book a vivid, cinematic feel.

Don is a capable but often overwhelmed lead, which helps ground the more fantastical events. His tense partnership with Veronika Varennikov is one of the book’s strengths. Their arguments, growing trust, and different approaches to danger give the story some welcome human friction amid the gunfire. Angel, meanwhile, is a menacing presence whose history gives the conflict more scope than a straightforward pursuit.

The book asks for some patience. Its explanations of the secret history are extensive, and the detailed descriptions can slow the pace, particularly early on. Readers who enjoy a lean thriller may find themselves wanting the story to move faster. The violence is also frequent and graphic. For readers who like their action fiction expansive and visually detailed, though, those same qualities may be part of its appeal.

Angel Dawn blends conspiracy thriller, science fiction, and supernatural action into an ambitious opening installment. It builds toward a dramatic confrontation while leaving major questions unresolved. This is explicitly Part One, and its ending sets up Don and Veronika’s continuing pursuit of Angel.

Book Review: The Warsaw Diary Keeper by Avi Dobzinski

A moving historical novel about a family’s struggle to survive war, persecution, and the destruction of the world they once knew. Avi Dobzinski’s The Warsaw Diary Keeper is a deeply affecting historical novel that follows Alina Kaufer and her family through the gathering darkness of prewar Europe and the devastating years of World War II. Drawing on real historical figures and documents, as well as fictional characters, Dobzinski creates an intimate portrait of a family caught in the machinery of history. At the heart of the story is Alina, a young girl whose childhood begins in a world of familiar homes, family gatherings, school lessons, and small everyday pleasures. Through her eyes, readers experience the gradual transformation of ordinary life into something increasingly frightening and uncertain. The growing hostility toward Jews, the spread of nationalism, and the collapse of social order are not presented merely as distant historical events. They intrude into family relationsh...

Book Review: Cosmic Sadness: Toska… By Kirill Khrestinin

Book Review: Cosmic Sadness: Toska… By Kirill Khrestinin In Cosmic Sadness: Toska… , Kirill Khrestinin presents a dark, unsettling exploration of loneliness, failed dreams, obsessive love, and the painful distance between the lives we imagine for ourselves and the lives we actually experience. Set largely within the brutal world of a prison, this psychologically intense novel follows Ruslan Levin, a Russian immigrant whose growing disillusionment with life threatens to consume whatever hope remains in him. Levin is a deeply troubled man. Approaching middle age, struggling with sleeplessness, and haunted by memories of the life he left behind in Russia, he finds himself increasingly alienated from American society and unable to establish meaningful connections with other people. His work as a correctional officer exposes him to violence and human cruelty, while his own thoughts become an equally disturbing prison. His loneliness is intensified by his conflicting desires for intima...
